Every year the NHCC offers amazing and heart-felt programming for Día de los Muertos. Thought sugar skulls were difficult to make? Let us show you how fun they really are! On the first Thursday of the month, the National Hispanic Cultural Center invites adults for creative fun in a relaxed, social setting which includes chips, salsa and cash bar to fuel your creative juices. Each session features a different art-making technique and materials. This is a free, community event, but we invite donations in any amount to help support the project and pay artists!

Día de los Muertos Day Long Events

Vamos al Museo: OneBeat 10:30 am  - 12 pm
NHCC Pete V. Domenici Education Building Free with registration
This is a fun and engaging artist-led family program.  Families (limited to 25 participants) will join with musicians from around the world who are part of Found Nation’s OneBeat project to create elements for the NHCC Dia de los Muertos Community Ofrenda. It’s a time for reunion and celebration while constructing meaning into one’s life. For 24-hours the dead have divine permission to visit loved ones. For most, the altars/ofrendas is the central focus of this tradition - filled with provisions and remembrances. Using recordings, stories and art materials, participants will contribute to the community altar on the day of our Despedida – our celebration to welcome and farewell our deceased loved ones. For registration and more information please contact me, Elsa Menéndez: (505) 246-2261 ext. 189 or elsa.menendez@state.nm.us

Día de los Muertos Hands-on Workshop:
Mini-Ofrendas and Sugar Skulls with Arturo Olivas and Christopher Gibson 2:30 am  -  4:30pm
NHCC Pete V. Domenici Education Building Free with registration
Día de los Muertos is a reverent and sincere time for all to remember those who have passed. Memories of loved ones that have marked our lives and enriched who we are can be expressed through the creation of an altar with    ofrendas. Small boxes and remembrances fitted together with traditional aspects of Día de los Muertos will make this workshop one of our most special. Learn how to construct mini-ofrendas out of any old box you might have lying around. Really any box…any shoe box, mint box, cigar box will do! We will also be making and decorating Calaveras de azucar – sugar skulls – another of the traditions used to commemorate those we loved who are no longer with us. Please feel free to bring photos, small mementos, or images that remind you of someone you would like to honor in an ofrenda. For more information please call Erica Garcia, Community and Curriculum Coordinator, NHCC at erica.garcia@state.nm.us or (505) 246-2261

Despedida 4:30 pm  - 6:30 pm
NHCC Pete V. Domenici Education Building Free Community Event
The National Hispanic Cultural Center will also hold its annual Despedida on Saturday, November 1st from 4:30pm – 6:30pm in the Domenici Education Building.  This annual community gathering has been the one of our most popular events. This is a chance for the community to observe Día de los Muertos and participate in the despedida. Synthesized between Mesoamerican beliefs and European influences Día de los Muertos gives people the opportunity to remember loved ones with traditional offerings and heartfelt thoughts and wishes. Come celebrate with music, poetry and hands-on art making at this time-honored event at the National Hispanic Cultural Center. For more information please call Erica Garcia, Community and Curriculum Coordinator, NHCC at erica.garcia@state.nm.us or (505) 246-2261
